Is the IT industry ageist?

Friday's Channel 4 news featured an item on how the IT industry is discriminating against older workers preferring to select younger workers rather than training current staff.

Research shows that there are 105,000 vacancies in ICT with only 30,000 computer science graduates recorded in 2009/2010 meaning that it will take some time to train up new staff to fill the gap. However, companies still see older workers as a chore and unable to learn new skills.

CREATIVE SECTOR SKILLS SHORTAGE

The director of the CBI in the North West, Damian Waters, has today highlighted that the growth of the creative sector could be hampered by the lack of relevant skills being taught.

The report details recommendations for the Government to introduce higher levels of computer programming and software development courses. Further, the CBI want to see greater collaboration with universities to ensure that courses are relevant to the working world.

We want PHP/Drupal Developers

After another successful year in the land of Drupal we're pleased to be expanding the development team here at Ixis. We're on the look out for two developers to join us on-site in our Daresbury office in the UK. Your work will be based at our new office and travel to clients is not required.

We work in a relaxed and informal environment, where the ability to manage your time and work load independently is important. You'll often be involved in several projects at the same time, although you may be responsible for a website from start to finish depending on work load.
