Businesses are facing increased costs and IT security is at risk because employees are failing to cope with the proliferation of passwords they need at work, research has revealed.

A survey, for security company RSA Security, involved 1,700 users - more than half of them IT professionals - and showed 28% were trying to manage more than 13 passwords at work. A further 30% were trying to keep track of between six and 12 passwords.

The survey also showed staff were resorting to insecure and risky methods to keep track of passwords, with a quarter keeping a record of their access codes in a document on their PC.

A further 22% listed the passwords on PDAs or handheld devices, while 15% wrote it down on a piece of paper, kept in their workspace or office.
