The future's bright, the future's #027AC6

If you're actually wondering what #027AC6 is, it's the colour hex code for a certain shade of blue, that of the open source framework Drupal. 2009 was a great year for us, with Drupal now accounting for over 75% of our revenue.

Cardiff Online, the British Council's online coverage of IATEFL 2009 Conference has been announced as a finalist in the 2009 e-Government National Awards.

Le Tour de Drupal

On the lead up to Drupalcon Paris in September two insane Drupal developers from the UK are planning to make the 300K journey from London to Paris through the power of pedals.

Chris Maiden of North West based Menus & Blocks will be making the trek to Paris on his Brompton, a bike that folds to the size of a large carrier bag, has 16" wheels and only 3 gears.

Although it's a lot of fun (maybe!), they're hoping to raise at least £1000 for the Meningitis Trust, it's going to be quite a challenge and your donations to help fuel the pedaling power!

I've now been using iPhone OS 3.0 for a week or so which is officially released today. Here is a quick recap of the new email and Exchange specific functions.

For the upcoming DrupalCamp UK we have designed some stress balls in the shape of the Druplicon to give away to all attendees.

They turned up today just in time for the 'camp, so we thought we'd share some action shots as the little Drupalicons invaded the Ixis office and servers.

For those unable to attend DrupalCamp UK we'll send out your very own Drupalicon to the first 5 people to shoot us a message via the contact form with their name and postal address.

Feedback appreciated, and we'll see (some of) you at DrupalCamp Manchester this coming weekend!

On the run up to DrupalCamp UK event in June I've been in contact with various book publishers to get some books for prizes. As a result we proudly present the first Sponsors of DrupalCamp UK. Both publishers have been extremely helpful and generous with their offerings of prizes and future discounts.

What sort of performance increase would you expect to see by simply using Alternative PHP Cache (APC) and Drupal caching? APC is an extension which caches the compiled PHP code whereas drupal itself caches dynamic pages in the database (for anonymous users only).

The following benchmarks were done using ApacheBench and 1000 requests (50 concurrently). The requests were sent to the frontpage of the site, which is quite intensive in terms of modules ( views // panels // custom modules - 259 queries to be exact)

After having used push email on devices for several years now across multiple devices (Windows Mobile 6 + Symbian 60) I can safely say email on the iPhone is, in my opinion, the best so far! Even comparing the iPhone to the newly released Blackberry Storm, the iPhone still works out cheaper as it works out of the box with Exchange 2003 & 2007 and no expensive additions are needed like Blackberry enterprise server.
