Swinging

Imagine you have your nice small network setup using Microsoft's Small Business Server and you are running out of disk space or the server is getting a bit old. On this server you have your exchange data, sharepoint, file stores, everything basically. You then decide to buy a new server to replace but want to keep your install, server name, databases, shares etc?

Drupalicon Winners

Posted in

The quick reactions of some members of the Drupal community a couple of weeks ago ensured they bagged themselves a little blue Drupalicon of their own in our giveaway.

We're pleased to announce that Jonathan, John, Amye, Amanda, Oliver, and Karoly all sent a winning message via our contact form. The winners spanned the globe, from the UK and France, to Africa, Canada, and the USA.

As mentioned in a previous blog post, an attendee at Drupalcamp UK built a nifty Drupalicon tracking map to see how far they have travelled. We're hoping the winners will add themselves to the map soon!

Exchange 2007 on VMWare

I recently had the nice job of installing Exchange 2007 onto a VMWare esxi server As much as I like Exchange I am not a very big fan of the over complexness of Exchange 2007 so I knew I would be in for a nice treat doing this.

This was quite a unique install for me as the whole Exchange 2007 was going to be on one virtual machine using just the local disks in the esxi server.

I had read reports that the ideal way to do this is to install the OS onto the virtual machine and then put the exchange datastore onto external storgage using iScsi or an FC San.

Business Case for Apple iPhone

As an avid user of mobile email I have over the years used various devices. I started with a Windows Mobile 5 O2 XDA II and then moved to an O2 XDA Mini. Whilst both of these used Active Sync to get my Microsoft Exchange email, the user experience wasn't very pleasing. The devices where slow and at the time data costs where quite expensive.

I've now been using iPhone OS 3.0 for a week or so which is officially released today. Here is a quick recap of the new email and Exchange specific functions.

Some administration and debugging modules for Drupal attach their statistics to the end of Drupal rendered pages using PHP's register_shutdown_function function facility. This is great to ensure the output is always available, no matter how badly built the theme being used is.

Examples of modules adding their stats to the footer include the superb Devel package which allows outputting statistics on your database queries (or "Gunk" as its called in the source code), and the Memcache Admin UI module which provides information about the memcache bin usage.

Drupalcamp Success!

The first Drupalcamp UK was held over the weekend at the BBC Backstage in Manchester. It was a great success with a large number of visitors showing up for both days. Congratulations to Dan Smith for pulling the event together and keeping it going over the weekend.

It was great to put faces to names, and chat with developers from across the country.

I dipped my toe in to the world of presenting at this weekends Drupalcamp, giving a short 30 minute session on how to configure your server environment to work with Drupals Multisite ability.

The slides used in the session are now available on slideshare.net if you'd like to take a closer look at the command line output I demonstrated, or the Apache VirtualHost configuration format.

For the upcoming DrupalCamp UK we have designed some stress balls in the shape of the Druplicon to give away to all attendees.

They turned up today just in time for the 'camp, so we thought we'd share some action shots as the little Drupalicons invaded the Ixis office and servers.

For those unable to attend DrupalCamp UK we'll send out your very own Drupalicon to the first 5 people to shoot us a message via the contact form with their name and postal address.

Feedback appreciated, and we'll see (some of) you at DrupalCamp Manchester this coming weekend!
